Very few marketing ventures cause a 20 or 30% increase. In addition, there will be those within every association that get very excited about this idea and it's tough not to get sucked in. Who wants to go against a friend or temper a friend's excitement?
Talking with associations that have gone this route, it hasn't been what they have expected. A few have even backed out of their contracts as fast as they can. Those that remain for the most part see very little increase and are looking for other solutions.
So let's take a moment and evaluate the challenges with trying to obtain more revenue through association websites:
1) Most association websites have very little guest oriented website traffic.
Taking a step back, association websites aren't the best medium for attracting potential guests. They are about attracting potential bed and breakfast members for that national, state or local association.
Check the status of any association you belong to. It's easy. Simply Google your state and "bed and breakfasts" for example "Alabama bed and breakfasts". What page does your association show up on? Very few association websites have solid website traffic that would benefit you. Take PAII for example which is the largest national association of innkeepers and has been around for a very long time. Google "bed and breakfasts" and PAII doesn't show up even by page 10. Even if an association claims to have good website traffic, make sure it is the traffic you need: potential guests.

We would encourage more associations to take this approach. See how membership is a secondary link almost as a "oh by the way, become a member". The Texas Bed and Breakfast Association is another stellar example. Notice how both Utah and Texas don't show availability grids or introduce price wars but just highlight their members. This is best.
2) Will this add to our pie or take away from it?
What will this company do to push more visitors to the association's website? If you do go with them use Google Analytics to track this boost in promotion. If they are not pushing more quality visits to your association's website, they are taking from the pie, not adding to it.
Most of these companies are reintroducing commissions to the bed and breakfast industry by taking up to 30% per reservation. Ouch! Often they share a little with the association. Skimming money away from the member inns and giving it to the association isn't a good long term idea.
Some offer a "free" online booking engine but those rarely compete with the industry leaders that have special and packages, gift shops, retail items, minimum night enhancements and more. It's not free if they take a commission per reservation. That's actually the most expensive online booking engine on the market. Even GDS reservations are fee based, not commission based. Look for a low monthly fixed cost not commission based. You need online bookings for your inn's website anyway. Directories that push business to your website and booking engine trump those that try to skim for themselves.
3) Price wars have come close to destroying the hotel and airline industries.
Some associations want to compare association members side by side pricing wise. That is a terrible idea since the bed and breakfast industry is all about the experience guests enjoy, not who is cheapest. If you want cheap go to a motel.
Look at the industries that have done price wars: the airline and chain hotel industries. Airlines have been doing so amazing (not!) they wanted a bailout a few years back. Southwest Airlines never did GDS or travel websites and is one of the few airlines to thrive and not rip off their clients with silly fees. They can offer low rates because they don't have to pay a middle man.
Hotels really struggle from time to time beating each other up on Hotels.com, Priceline, Expedia, Travelocity, etc. Marriot Hotels is pulling out from travel websites (GDS) and promoting their own website and booking system because the commissions are killing them. Others will follow.
Associations should highlight their members, not introduce a price war. Don't be shocked if members start leaving to get out of devaluing their rooms.
4) Is displaying association availability a good thing?
What about showing who has vacancy? Studies by Reservation Nexus have shown that displaying an availability grid can often do more harm than good. For bed and breakfasts that are not full (80% of bed and breakfasts) it sends the message: "since they are so vacant, it might not be the best place to stay". A simple "vacancy" or "no vacancy" is better than a full grid in most scenarios.
Most of the time the big push for showing detailed availability is for members that want to share with other members when they are full. This is a valid request, but that doesn't mean you share that information with the public. Availability grids normally help the full get fuller and everyone else remains the same.
5) A member list and/or availability grid should be just the start.
Showing members and availability is just part of the toolset an association needs to more easily run their operations and better communicate and coordinate with its members. Member management, member dues, conference management, forums, newsletters, articles & education, vendor management, etc. need to be a part of any association system put into place.
6) Contracts are a bad thing.
It is kind of baffling that most of these companies approaching associations are forcing them into two or three year contracts to skim revenue. Their cost for setting up the operation is trivial so why the long term contracts? Long term contracts are good if an initial investment needs to be covered, for items such as equipment or payroll. Be wary of long term contracts where there is very little risk or initial investment involved.
Recommendation: Convert your association website to be more of a travel website.
Like the Utah and Texas state associations, reinvent your association website to be focused on attracting potential guests. Associations by their nature have great search engine potential. Doing so will increase revenue to your members and increase membership. The key is to push business to your association members, not take profits away from them. You are associating to build everyone up, not getting them to compete in a price war.

St. David's is situated on the far western coast of Pembrokeshire, West Wales and is part of the magnificent National Park coastal scenery with all its abundance of wild life.

St David is the patron saint of Wales and was reputedly said to have been born on a cliff top on the South-West Wales coast during a very fierce storm. The site of his birth is marked by the tiny ancient chapel close to a holy well. There is also an 18th century chapel dedicated to his mother 'Non' which can still be seen near St David's Cathedral.
St. David died around 589/601 having founded a monastery at the current site of the Cathedral. It was a strict monastic order as he was the most influential clergyman in all Wales. Pilgrims would come by sea, mooring there boats at the chapels and shrines along the way to give thanks for their safe journey.
Between 645 and 1097, St David's (Menevia) was attacked and destroyed many times and it wasn't until 1181 that the present Cathedral was begun. However, in 1648 it was destroyed again, this time by Parliamentary soldiers.
Since then the Cathedral has been rebuilt and restored yet again but is now in outstanding condition. Adjacent to the Cathedral stands the magnificent ruins of the medieval Bishop's Palace which dates from the 14th century and displays the marvels of medieval architecture.

Getting My Visa Extension in Boracay, Philippines

Today, I had to go to the immigration office because my visa was about to expire. Unfortunately, most foreigners only get 21 days in the Philippines. Remember NOT to pass the 21 days or you will be fined. I had a friend who was over a week late on getting his visa extension and had to pay 1,000 pesos ($22.50USD). On top of that, the next time he came to the Philippines he was questioned about why he was late getting the extension and they told him to show proof of his return ticket because of it. Lumiere then showed them proof of his return ticket on his computer, but they then asked for a hard-copy of the return ticket. He didn't have one and the immigration worker was kind enough to let him pass anyway.
The immigration office is located near D-Mall, but we ended up getting lost trying to find it. Lumiere asked a security guard at Boracay Resort and he told us it was about 5 minutes from where we were. We ended up finding the immigration office after walking on the same street as D-Mall. The immigration office is located in the same building as Nervana Beach Resort. It was about 3:30 PM when we arrived and there were already a few people inside. We sat in the comfortable chairs and waited for our turn.
There was only one person working in the counter so I see how it could get busy. It seemed a bit disorganized since there was no actual queue. I was called up after Lumiere and I took a seat and the immigration officer asked me for my passport. She looked for my stamp showing the date I entered the Philippines and told me I needed to make copies of the passport page and the stamp. There was also an immigration form I had to fill out.
I went over to the printing place with Lumiere. To get there, make a left when you walk out of the immigration building and look for D-Mall on your left hand side. Continue walking down the street for about 5 minutes and you will see a place where you can do printing. They took my passport and made copies of the pages. One of the girls working at the print shop looked at me and said something in Tagalog. She then told me "She thinks you're handsome." Pointing to the girl working the front counter. She was pretty cool really short and petite. She was then making comments about how the girl working at the front counter liked my nose and my smile. "Wow" I thought to myself.
When I finished my printing, I made sure to write down my phone number and give it to her on a piece of paper. She smiled and the other girl working next to her had a surprised look on her face. I told her "Give me a call sometime." She looked at me and smiled. I usually don't leave girls my phone number, but I decided to try it this time. I'll let you know if she gives me a message.
Finally, I walked back to the immigration office and there were SO MANY PEOPLE... I found out later most of them were waiting on their passport. There also wasn't a proper queue, and I spoke to two Western girls and told them they would need to make copies of their passport page for the entry stamp. So make sure to do that before you even go to the immigration office to avoid the hassle. I then gave the immigration lady my passport, the immigration document, and the copies from my passport. She said "that will be 3,050 pesos ($68.50 USD)." I got the money and gave it to her. She then told me I would have to pick up the passport tomorrow.

Going From Boracay to Cebu

I got up this morning and said goodbye to Lumiere. I've been hanging out with him for the last month and a half. It has been a great experience hanging with him because he has so much knowledge on traveling and picking up. I definitely picked up some good advice.
I took the shuttle bus from my resort in Bulabog Beach to the ferry station. Originally, the resort wanted to charge me 500 pesos to get to the station but I was able to negotiate the price down to 250 pesos. I was carrying a backpack with my PS3, my laptop bag, and my backpacker's backpack. I think I will buy one small suitcase with me so I don't have to carry my laptop bag and backpack. I think this will minimize the amount of bags I have to carry.
Once at the ferry station, a guy who worked for the ferry helped me with my bags. I tipped him 20 pesos. I then had to pay 25 pesos for the ferry ride to Caticlan and 50 pesos for the terminal fee. The ferry ride was a bit rocky, but I got a nice view of the mountains on the way to Caticlan. After about 10 minutes, we arrived in Caticlan. I had one of the guys working at the Ferry station help me carry my big backpack again and paid him 20 pesos as well. I then got a tricycle taxi for 50 pesos that I had to pay at the tricycle taxi stand to Caticlan Airport.
At the airport, there are two security checkpoints. Also, you have to print out your flight confirmation or they will not let you into the airport. Fortunately, the company I was flying with had an office near the airport. I asked the guy who was working at the front of the airport if he could watch my backpack. I know this was probably a mistake, but I didn't feel like lugging into to the office. When I came back from printing my confirmation, the security guard working at the airport questioned me on why I left my bag there. He also told me that I shouldn't leave my bag unattended. I think it's because it could be considered a security risk.
Nonetheless, I made it into the airport. I checked into my flight and my backpack was only around 11KG so I didn't have to pay an excess baggage fee. Passengers are allowed 10 KG for flights leaving Caticlan. I then had to go through one more security checkpoint and then there was a small waiting room with two gates. I couldn't get a wi-fi connection and my USB internet was not working so I messed around on my computer for two hours. I got to the airport early so it was mostly spent waiting around.
The flight with SE Asia Air was delayed over 40 mins, but the take off didn't take long at all. I presume because the airport in Boracay is small. They also served water and a small pack of BBQ nuts for free. I had my own window seat on the left aisle and I would say that the seats in SE Asia Air were more comfortable than Cebu Pacific. The flight time to Cebu was only 45 minutes. I felt like the flight was rushed by the flight attendant and also found her to be rude. She made a comment to me "Turn off your laptop" we're landing.
I'd say that the price of the flight which was only around 3,000 pesos outweighed the hassle of flying with SE Asia Air. I have yet to find an airline that I really like flying with in the Philippines. But it's a cheap tickets right? So I'll live with it!
I got to Cebu and used my USB internet to get the map of the address to the hostel in case I needed it. I then went over to the information desk and the lady mentioned that the yellow taxis are cheaper, but the white taxes were closest to where we were. I had a lot of luggage, and didn't feel like walking. So I decided to take the more expensive taxi which cost me 360 pesos.
My cab driver was very friendly and asked me "Where are you from?" and other questions. He was quite lively. We drove from Lapu Lapu City where the airport is into Cebu City. The drive took about 20 minutes and you have to cross a bridge which connects the two cities. I had to run some errands the next day and the driver mentioned that he could give me a rate of 1,000 pesos for 3 hrs. I wasn't too interested in it.
We arrived at Cebu Guesthouse. The security guard dressed in white asked "Do you have a reservation?" I told him "No, do you have private rooms available?" He responded "Yes." I went inside to the check in of the hostel and surely enough they did not have any private rooms available - just a dorm. I prefer not to sleep in dorms because I lose out on sleep and it's hard for me to get things done when there are so many people in the room.
I asked for hotel rooms and they recommended the Mango Park Hotel across the street. The security guard was even kind enough to carry my bags to the hotel. I arrived at the hotel and went inside. The place looked nice and then I asked her the magical question "How much per night?" I thought she said 750 pesos, but I was mistaken. She intended to say "1,750 pesos" which is roughly around 40 bucks. I thought about it for a few minutes and decided not to stay. "I'm not in the US and 40 bucks a night for a room is outrageous" I thought to myself.
I called up a couchsurfing girl I had talked to previously and she knew of some places I could stay. She arrived about 10 minutes later and she took me to this pension called C'est la Vie Pension that was about a 5-minute drive away. It's basically a standard private room with TV, air conditioner, closet space, bathroom with hot water shower, queen size bed, and a desk. Wanna know the price? Only 700 pesos per night! It sure beats staying at that overpriced hotel. More to come on my stay in Cebu

They will also show you where the oxygen masks, floatation devices, and exist signs are located.

Okay so today we are going to talk about driving in winter weather. For someone who was born and has spent his life in Vermont winter driving is like second nature to me. It was not until I married a Texan that I realized that not all people have winter driving in their blood. So with that I am going to give some advice that will hopefully help you out.

The first thing I noticed with my wife's driving is that she was petrified of snowflakes when she was driving. She however did not look at the road and was not aware of things such as black ice. So my first piece of advise would be to look at the road and not the sky. Sure heavy blowing snow can blind you but the ice on the ground can cause you to slide off and get into an accident. Drive slow in winter weather and monitor conditions carefully.

Now how about tires? Snow tires in my opinion are the only way to go. Snow tires are designed for severe weather where all season tires are designed for limited traction and braking in these conditions. The important thing is braking as snow tires have much better grip. Remember on ice any tire will slide so it is best to not slam on the brakes. If your brakes lock up this can be trouble, driving slow and cautiously is much better then braking at the last minute and causing a wreck. Also it is a good time to mention that a SUV that is $ wheel drive is not safer and does not warrant you to drive at higher speeds in bad conditions. In fact an SUV is heavier and more awkward then a compact car so once you start sliding it is hard to control this type of vehicle. Having a 4 wheel drive does not give you a get out of a wreck free card so please be very careful with this type of vehicle. Eight out of ten accidents on highways in Vermont seem to involve an SUV just for an example.

Now if you happen to get in a skid there are 2 rules of thumb. Please understand that what I am about to tell you does not always work and to do this at your own risk. You have been warned. So if you have a front wheel drive car and begin sliding many times if you hit the gas your wheels will spin enough to pull you out of the skid. With a rear wheel drive it is the opposite. With this type of vehicle you can at times pump the brakes to stop you from sliding. These techniques have saved me from time to time as well as others. They do however take some practice.

So there you have it. Take it slow and be aware of road conditions. Calm down and drive safely. Oh and if you have bald tires please stay off the road. Other drivers on the road do not need to be involved in an accident with you for being foolish and driving with bald tires in severe weather.

Sometimes my penny-pinching attitude overrides my street smarts (aka. lack of better judgment). Due to flight schedules, I was forced to spend one night in Nairobi before venturing on to Zanzibar. When researching accommodations for that night, I thought of the thousands I was spending on 6 luxurious nights' sleep in the bush, and decided I could rough it just once.

I found the perfect place: cheap and relatively near both airports. When I asked to reserve a single room, however, I was informed that all rooms were booked for that day. Instead, another option was offered: to sleep in a rented tent and sleeping bag. I debated and debated, and searched a few more locations, but the $11 price tag for an evening's stay was enough to persuade me to make the reservation.

I still didn't feel completely comfortable with the decision I had made, but I remained bull headed and determined to see it through. Thankfully, in my case, an angel was sent to intervene. Mary Anne arrived at the Mara Camp the same time I did. She is friends with the manager, Penny, and had come from Nairobi to spend a few days of relaxation. During that time we had some intriguing discussions about the novels she has written, such as "My Warrior Son", and "Nomad". Once she found out I had an evening layover in Nairobi, she asked where I was staying. She had never heard of the accommodation, but after telling her the street it was located on, she was quick to offer her home to me.

As it turned out, the street name of the accommodation I was supposed to have boasts the same name and general location as Kenya's largest slum, Kibera. Mary Anne was a wonderful hostess, providing me with a 4 poster bed, on-suite bathroom, a personal tour of the city and the aforementioned slum, along with feeding me a beautiful cheese souffle dinner at the end of the day.

The best part of it all, though, was that my 5 star Nairobi treatment cost less than it would have to sleep in a rented tent and sleeping bag, as it was FREE.

In the Mara I was paired up with a lady from England named Cathy. She had been on safari a few times before, loved birds and was thirsty for knowledge. Meaning, she was great to travel with since she opened my mind up to a number of new observations.

At one point her thirst produced a question I wouldn't have otherwise asked in my desire to know more. We had been talking to our guide, Joseph, who is Maasai. We asked him of his culture; how old he believed it was. He stated that he, and other tribesmen, believe the tribe is thousands of years old, having traveled south from Mt. Sinai. It had me thinking, and when I made mention of the 12 tribes of Israel, he said it is believed that the name Maasai is derived from Manasseh, Joseph's son. He stated that non-tribesmen believe his tribe originated from somewhere in the Sudan.

He spoke of how most men have more than one wife. He is the oldest of his father's sons, being a child of his father's first wife. There are five. When he was a child, the Kenyan government mandated all Maasai tribesmen to send one child to school. Joseph was sent because he was the only one of age. Most fathers send the least favored child to school, that child is generally born from the least favored wife. The seemingly harsh infliction is a huge blessing for the unpopular son. In the end, that son turns into a great blessing for his father and rest of the family as well, since he is the means of financial support for them.

When Joseph was around 14 or 15, the age at which most men in his tribe reach adulthood, the government placed a ban on killing wild game. Until that time, teenage boys, to prove their manhood, would spear a lion. The boy who's spear first pierced the animal would be honored and allowed to wear the lion's mane around his neck. Now there is no ritual accompanying their circumcision into adulthood.

It was upon hearing that which caused Cathy to pose the question I wouldn't have otherwise asked. "What about female circumcision?," she inquired. He explained that after a girl's first menstruation, she too is circumcised. Before Cathy's question, I tried feigning ignorance. Although I had heard it common in Africa, it still left a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I couldn't help myself at that point, I had to ask, even though it wasn't my place. "Joseph," I said, "will you circumcise your daughter?" He responded that he didn't want to, but unless tradition changed by then he would have to, since it's hard to find a man who will marry an uncircumcised woman.

As saddening as it to see an ancient culture desintegrate, Joseph saying most people doubt the Maasai will be around in 100 years, it is wonderful to know that modern day knowledge is being brought into the tribe, and the end of barbaric and brutal practices is in sight.

When to go

The weather is best, however, during the high season, from mid-December to mid-April, with rainfall low and the heat tempered by cooling trade winds. The peak season also brings the biggest crowds and the highest prices.

Getting around
The bus system in Barbados is excellent, with blue government buses and yellow, privately owned minibuses running all over the island. Fares are a flat rate of B$1.50. Buses run roughly every half-hour between Grantley Adams International Airport and Bridgetown, stopping at or near most of the south coast resorts en route. Services to the resorts on the west coast are less frequent.

Food & Drink
Fresh seafood is the island's speciality: snapper, barracuda and dolphin fish, as well as fresh prawns and lobster. Most popular of all is the flying fish - virtually a Bajan national emblem.

For snacks , you'll find cutters (bread rolls with a meat or cheese filling), coconut bread, and more substantial rotis (flat, unleavened bread wrapped around a filling of curried meat or vegetables); all are widely available.

Rum is the liquor of choice for many Bajans. Hundreds of tiny rum bars dot the island, which are an integral part of Bajan social life. On the coast, you'll find fewer places that cater specifically to drinkers but, all-inclusives apart, most hotels and restaurants will welcome you for a drink even if you're not staying or eating.

Teide National Park

Access to the now extinct volcano is either by foot or by cable car that will carry you almost to the very summit. From the peak, on a clear day, you are in heaven and have breathtaking views of Gran canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. This is the Canary Islands most visited tourist attraction and must not be missed.

Loro parque
Originally a Parrot Park, it has now grown into Tenerife's second biggest attraction after mount Teide. The Loro parque is home to the worlds most important Parrot collection with over 300 species, an amazing Sea-Lion show, Dolphin Show, Parrot Show, Aquarium with Shark tunnel, Gorillas,Chimpanzees, Tigers, Jaguars, Flamingos, Alligators, Tortoises, Orchid House, Gambian Market, a 'NaturaVision' Cinema and the worlds largest Penguinarium with a reproduction Antarctic climate within which 12 tons of snow falls a day.

Tenerife Beaches

Climate

Paphos

The legacy from its remarkable history adds up to nothing less than an open museum. Among the treasures are the remarkable mosaics in the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus and Aion, beautifully preserved after 16 centuries under the soil. Then there are the mysterious vaults and caves, the Tombs of the Kings, the Pillar to which Saint Paul was allegedly tied and whipped, the ancient Odeon Theatre and other places of interest including the Byzantine Museum and the its Archaeological Museum

Larnaca town (Larnaka)
Larnaca, a town with an easy-going pace, has strong links to the past. In the heart of modern Larnaca one finds remains of the ancient city-kingdom of Kition, reminiscent of its glorious days. The Mycenaean Greeks fortified the town with cyclopean walls in the 12th century while the Phoenicians founded a powerful kingdom here in the 9th century. Kition is the birthplace of the philosopher Zeno, founder of the Stoic School, and it is here that Saint Lazarus came to live after his resurrection. In the 18th century it became a commercial centre and seat of the European consulates. The delightful Palm Trees Promenade, its fort, and its old quarters give Larnaka its unique character. The nearby salt lake is a favourite stop-over spot for thousands of migrant birds in winter, whilst on its edge in a tranquil setting stands a popular Muslim pilgrimage place.

The whole district of Larnaca has something special to offer the visitor, including Choirokoitia, the oldest Neolithic settlement on the island, Slavrovouni Monastery and the famous Church of Angeloktisti.

Limassol town
Successor to two city-kingdoms and host to a Royal Wedding in the Middle Ages, contemporary Limassol (Lemesos) stretches along the south coast. Proud of the spontaneous hospitality of its people, its archaeological sites, its mediaeval castles and its merry Carnival and Wine festivals, Lemesos is the island's most important tourist and wine industry centre. Hotels, restaurants and night spots abound along the beach whilst close by lie the pine-clad southern slopes of Troodos with the picturesque wine producing villages, the idyllic mountain resorts and the picturesque Pitsylia area.

Ayia Napa (Agia Napa)
The popular holiday resorts of Ayia Napa and Paralimni have been called a veritable paradise for anyone who loves the sea and water sports. Split
The pretty city of Split has a rich history. The city sits mainly on a peninsula on the eastern part of the island of Ciovo, although it has nowadays spread onto the mainland and encompasses the mouth of the River Cetina. Eisriesenwelt Caves

The caves are decorated with all kinds of ice formations including gigantic columns and towers, waterfalls and glaciers. The cave remains frozen throughout the year and even in summer the temperature remains at around 1 degree centigrade

The Benedictine Abbey, Admount
The Benedictine Abbey was founded in 1074 by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg. The Abbey was destroyed by fire in 1865, the world-famous Baroque library was untouched.

Gurk Cathedral was founded by the Benedictine order in the 11th century and is regarded as the most outstanding example of Romanesque architecture in Austria.

The Grossglockner Alpine Road
Since 1935 the Grossglockner Alpine Road has played host to more than 50 million visitors. The enormous and elegant Schönbrunn Palace is one of Vienna's top attractions. Originally the 1,440-room summer palace of the Habsburgs, it was designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and completed in 1711. Forty of the 1440 rooms are open to the public. The interior is designed in the classic Rococo style of the 18th century with lots of red, white and gold. There are beautiful formal gardens surrounding the palace.

The Vienna Natural History Museum is based in a handsome neo-Renaissance building near the Museum of Fine Arts. This museum has important collections of early Stone Age exhibits. The most famous display at the museum is a Stone-Age body called "Venus of Willendorf," whose unearthing in 1906 confirms Vienna’s ancient origins.

At Kennedy Airport, you can access the subway into Manhattan by first getting on the Long Term Parking Lot Bus which makes a stop at the Howard Beach Subway Station. Take the A-Train from there into town.

How To Get Around New York
If you’re thinking about renting a car as part of a New York vacation package, can I just say one thing: DON'T! It’s not worth the cost, traffic, parking problems and general hassle. The best way to get around this city are: Subway, Taxi, Bus and walking.

The subway is fast, convenient, and the lines and stations are numerous. Even though the subway map looks like a plate of spaghetti, it’s all color-coded, so you’ll understand it pretty quick. And it’s generally very safe – just use a little common sense, like not flashing around wallets and purses with large amounts of money.

The MetroCard is a good deal and gives you unlimited rides on the whole underground and bus system for $7. Buy them at vending machines and corner stores. If you’re out very late you may be more comfortable with a taxi home, which are easy to find and quite reliable.

One of the best things about New York is that it’s a superb walking city! Many great sights, shops and restaurants in Manhattan can be found on foot.

Best Areas to Stay in New York holiday guide

On the northside of the river from the brewery is the historic Smithfield area, scene of the famous horse sales and home to the Jameson Whiskey distillery, east of which is the city's main thoroughfare, O'Connell Street from which the rebellion was launched that resulted in Irish independence.

Pubs are an integral part of Dublin's social life and an essential part of any visit. The charm of most of Dublin's older pubs derives from the fact that they're simple, no-nonsense places, the better ones unchanged for decades, where you can get a good pint of Guinness and the people are friendly.

There are over 800 pubs and bars in the city, where you're likely to find music and other entertainment.

Clubs are by nature volatile. There are two distinct club scenes in Dublin. The first is an eclectic collection - including the new, much talked-about chic clubs - scattered around the city centre. Most are hard to get into - that's part of their cachet - and expensive at the weekends. The second, is based in and around Leeson Street, southeast of St Stephen's Green. The clubs here do, however, serve a purpose: a string of basement places that are busy after everything else has shut, these are the clubs to hit at two or three in the morning if you're really desperate to go on partying. Most have no entry fee but serve very expensive drinks - they're at their best Thursday to Sunday from around 1am till dawn.

Dublin has a large number of cinemas - almost all of them on and around O'Connell Street - showing mainstream films. All Dublin's cinemas operate an enlightened policy of cheap seats before 5pm seven days a week. The peculiarities of the film distribution system mean that new movies are often released earlier in Ireland than in Britain.

Dublin may not be the gastronomic capital of the world, but there's plenty of choice - nearly all of it south of the Liffey - for both lunchtime and evening eating. Café society has reached Dublin in a big way in recent years, providing a new range of chic and trendy locations - in and around Grafton Street and Temple Bar - for all-day eating and drinking, and on Sundays many more places open up for sustaining brunches. At lunchtime, Dublin's many pubs usually offer the best value: you can usually get soup and sandwiches and often much more substantial, traditional meals. The cheapest fast-food outlets - everything from Pizzaland and Wimpy to cheap Chinese and the ubiquitous kebab houses - are centred around O'Connell Street.

In the evening there's no shortage of restaurants. The spectrum of cuisines on offer is impressively wide, ranging from Egyptian, Lebanese, Russian and Cajun to the more familiar French, Italian and Chinese. Several restaurants offer traditional Irish fare, and there's also a number of good seafood places and plenty of vegetarian options. The cheaper, livelier restaurants are concentrated around the Temple Bar area, between Dame Street and the Liffey, while more expensive establishments are scattered throughout the city, with a concentration around St Stephen's Green.

Over over six million foreigners fly into the country each year, Thailand has become Asia's primary holiday destination and is a useful and popular first stop on any overland travel through Southeast Asia. The influx of tourist money has played a significant part in the country's recent development, yet Thailand's cultural integrity remains largely unchanged.

In this country of fifty-three million people, over ninety percent are practising Theravada Buddhists, and King Bhumibol is a revered figure across his nation. Tiered temple rooftops and saffron-robed monks dominate every vista, and, though some cities and beach resorts are characterized by high-rises and neon lights, the typical Thai community is the traditional farming village: ninety percent of Thais still earn their living from the land.

Most vacations start in Bangkok. Thailand's huge, noisy, polluted capital can be an overwhelming introduction to Southeast Asia, but there are traveller-oriented guesthouses here, and heaps of spectacular temples to visit on holiday. It's also the best place for arranging onward travel and visas for neighbouring countries. A popular side-trip from the city takes in the raft houses of Kanchanaburi, the infamous site of the Bridge over the River Kwai.

After Bangkok, many travel north, sometimes via the ancient capitals of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, to the enjoyably laid-back city of Chiang Mai, where they organize treks to nearby hilltribe villages. There's tranquil countryside in bucketloads up in the northern highlands around Mae Hong Son and along the Mekong River in Thailand's northeast (Isaan), where you can stay in village guesthouses and hop across the border into Laos. The northeast is the least visited area of Thailand, but holds two fine ancient Khmer ruins at Phimai and Phanom Rung, and the country's most popular national park, Khao Yai.

After travel, trekking and rural relaxation, most visitors on holiday want to head for the beach - and Thailand's eastern and southern coasts are lined with gorgeous white-sand shores, aquamarine seas and kaleidoscopic reefs. The most popular of these are the east coast backpackers' resorts of Ko Samet and Ko Chang, the Gulf Coast islands of Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao, and the Andaman coast idylls of Laem Phra Nang, Ko Phi Phi, Ko Lanta and Ko Tarutao.

The southern island of Phuket and the east coast resort of Pattaya are more expensive, package-tour holiday oriented spots. In the deep south, Thailand merges almost seamlessly with Malaysia, and there are plenty of border crossing points here; the city of Hat Yai in particular offers convenient long-distance bus and rail links to many Malaysian towns. Travel into Cambodia overland is not so easy, but there are two crossings currently open, Poipet and Trat.

Despite encroaching Americanism, a tide accelerated by the NAFTA free trade agreement, and close links with the rest of the Spanish-speaking world (an avid audience for Mexican soap operas), the country remains resolutely individual. Its music, its look, its sound, its smell rarely leave you in any doubt about where you are, and the thought "only in Mexico" - sometimes in awe, sometimes in exasperation, most often in simple bemusement - is rarely far from a traveller's mind. The strength of Mexican identity perhaps hits most clearly if you travel overland across the border with the United States: this is the only place on earth where a single step will take you from the "First" world to the "Third". It's a small step it really is a giant leap.

You have to be prepared to adapt to travel in any country that is still "developing" and where change has been so dramatically rapid. Although the mañana mentality is largely an outsiders' myth, Mexico is still a country where timetables are not always to be entirely trusted, where anything that can break down will break down and where any attempt to do things in a hurry is liable to be frustrated. You simply have to accept the local temperament - that work may be necessary to live, but it's not life's central focus, that minor annoyances really are minor, and that there's always something else to do in the meantime. At times it can seem that there's incessant, inescapable noise and dirt. More deeply disturbing are the extremes of wealth and absolute poverty, most poignant in the big cities where unemployment and austerity measures imposed by the massive foreign debt have bitten hardest. But for the most part, this is an easy, a fabulously varied, and an enormously enjoyable and friendly place in which to travel.

Truth is that, as long as you don't yearn to get away from it all, you'll find almost anything you want here, from magnificent beaches by day to clubs and discos by night. If you want to stay in the heart of all the action, try a local resort. These can range from budget overnight accommodations to luxury resorts like Pueblo Bonito where you can stay for a week or more at a time. You can also choose from pay as you go or all-inclusive. It just depends on your preference.

What Acapulco undoubtedly has going for it, however, is its stunning bay : a sweeping scythe-stroke of yellow sand backed by the white towers of the high-rise hotels and, behind them, the jungly green foothills of the Sierra. And, even though there are hundreds of thousands of people here throughout the year - the town itself has a population approaching one and a half million and even out of season (busiest months are Dec-Feb) most of the big hotels remain nearly full - it rarely seems oppressively crowded. Certainly there's always space to lie somewhere along the beach, partly because of its sheer size, partly because of the number of rival attractions from hotel pools to parasailing and "romantic" cruises.

The Valley of México has been the country's centre of gravity since earliest prehistory, long before the concept of a Mexican nation existed. Based in this mountain-ringed basin - dotted with great salt - and freshwater lagoons and dominated by the vast snowcapped peaks of Popocatépetl and Ixtaccíhuatl - were the most powerful civilizations the country has seen. Today the lakes have all but disappeared, and the mountains are shrouded in smog, but it continues to be the heart of the country, its physical centre and the generator of every political, cultural and economic pulse.

At the crossroads of everything sprawls the vibrant, elegant, frenetic and fascinating Mexico City . In population one of the largest cities in the world, with more than twenty million inhabitants, its lure is irresistible. There's certainly no shortage of extremely large and expensive yachts in the marina. At 50,000 pounds a day, not including fuel, the luxury super yacht, Savarona, is all yours. With its solid silver sinks, and Turkish bath, it's very Monaco.

However, don't be alarmed. Luxury in Monaco does not have to be quite so ostentatious. Craig's hotel Columbus was among the apartment blocks of La Fontvieille in the commercial district. It has a distinctively hip and laid-back feel about it. It's also a good place to chill out away from Monaco's social whirl.

It's no surprise that eating out in Monaco is expensive so it's worth taking advantage of the Brasserie. Dinner is included in the price of the package. This hotel has stirred things up a little and it's a refreshing addition to some of the stale traditional hotels you might otherwise find.

Formula One, anyone?
The streets of Monaco are like any ordinary streets for every day of the year except on a certain famous weekend, making this the only grand prix circuit in the world where you can live out your formula one fantasies while popping out to the shops.

The big players still come to Monaco to stake fortunes on the role of a dice. Gambling has been a serious pastime here since the 19th Century with takings from society's high rollers keeping the principality awash with cash.

This is a hard place to do on a budget, so if you've had enough of the extravagance and expense you can jump on a train at Monaco's main railway station, and head down the coast. A 50-mile train ride will take you away from it all and at just £1.50.

Ten miles west of Monaco is Villefranche. Since the last century, it has been a favourite haunt of the English well-to-do. The harbour area and the beach are the town's main attraction. It's worth exploring the pretty streets as well. Sunday morning is a good time to visit Villefranche, when the town holds a weekly antiques market, a kind of glorified car boot sale flogging items from Monaco's glamorous past.

Poser's paradise
Back in Monaco harbour and there's always another excuse for the locals to show off. The annual Riva regatta is one of many society events held throughout the summer and there's no shortage of spectator sports for the weekend visitor to enjoy.

In the south-east, in the Visayas islands, lies Cebu, which is internationally known for its suitability for watersports.

If a busy and cosmopolitan city is more up your street for some of your holiday then you cant go far wrong with Manilla. Taking its name from the Nilad, a white-flowered mangrove plant, it has a long and turbulent past by any standards. Manilla has risen above all its past troubles and is now a thouroughly modern city where the past is still preserved and visible.

Manila
Set on Manila Bay, the capital of the Philippines is divided into different districts, each with something to offer. They are linked by the fantastically painted, but less fantastically maintained ‘Jeepney’ pick-up trucks that ferry the locals from place to place. Many people stay for just a day or so before moving on, but there is plenty to explore in the city.

Remnants of the colonial Spanish era are found right in the heart of Manila in the ‘Walled City’, Intramuros, which is one of the best-preserved colonial city centres. Dungeons and old churches share space with art galleries, theatres, and a nature park. Nearby Rizal Park is a great place to visit first thing in the morning to see the locals doing their Tai Chi or practising the traditional martial art of arnis de mano.

Manila is also home to Malacanang Palace, the official residence of the highest chief executive of the country and one of the most historic structures in the Philippines. Along the northern bank of the historic Pasig River is Chinatown, a symbol of the long history of Chinese presence. Makati is the business district of the city, but it is also home to some of the grandest five-star hotels and largest shopping centres. Malate and Ermita districts are also popular for their variety of restaurants, clubs, bars, cafes, art and antique shops.

Cebu
Even before the Spanish colonialists arrived here in the 16th century, trade with the Chinese flourished in this province and many Chinese and Spanish landmarks remain. The magnificent Basilica Minore del Santo Nino was built in 1575 and stands close to Magellan’s Cross, which apparently contains splinters from a cross he planted on the shores of Cebu on his first visit in 1521. The Taoist temple, located in a residential area known as Beverly Hills, is a symbol of the city’s large and influential ethnic Chinese population. Across a road bridge from the airport is Mactan Island, a 15 square kilometre island made entirely of coral reef. Once a quiet fishing community, it is now home to some of the best beach resorts in the Philippines.

The north is one of the most advanced industrial societies in the world, its people speak Italian with the cadences of France or Germany and its "capital", Milan, is a thoroughly European city. It's hard not to be impressed when a city's vistas take in over two thousand years of achievements, and this is evident in some of Rome's most popular tourist attractions. Wind your way up the Grand Canal, past bridges and ornate canal-side homes; sip espresso in famous St Mark's Square (if you can afford it and don't mind sharing your table with a few pigeons!); sip a Bellini in the cocktail's birthplace, Harry's Bar; or visit the late Peggy Guggenheim's impressive collection of modern art.

It can cost a lot to visit somewhere this good-looking. Restaurants and accommodation are the most expensive in Italy, and a ride in a traditional Venetian gondola can set you back €62 for less than an hour's ride. But is the expense worth it? We say, most definitely.

Florence

This beautiful city in the heart of Tuscany still emanates all the artistic wonder so prevalent here several centuries ago. It was of course the home of the Renaissance, of Machiavelli and Michelangelo, and it seems Florence is still intriguing and inspiring its visitors today.

The famous Uffizi Gallery is a mecca for art lovers, holding Botticelli's Birth of Venus and works by Rembrandt, Raphael, Titian and Caravaggio in what was Europe's first modern museum. Amble onwards to the Santa Croce, a church which holds the skeletons of some of Renaissance-era Florence's most prominent names. The duomo, or dome, which sits atop Florence's cathedral is the most recognised symbol of the city. Then of course there's the world's most famous statue, Michelangelo's David, carved out of one large piece of marble and able to be viewed at the Galleria dell'Accademia.

And for those who prefer something a bit more modern, visit the Galleria Poggiali e Forconi, an exhibition gallery dedicated to contemporary artists like Enzo Cucchi, Luca Pignatelli and Gilberto Zorio.

For non-art lovers, have a wander around the city's craft shops where you'll be able to pick up leather goods and silver ornaments and jewellery at bargain prices.

Sorrento

Sorrento is a picture-perfect Italian tourist town balanced on the high cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. It's a beautiful resort style town, handily close to the nearby island of Capri, and a short albeit hairy drive away from the beautiful Amalfi Coast.

If you can bear to leave your people-watching spot at one of the city's elegant cafes, take a stroll around the town's piazzas and up to the hills for spectacular views; or shop for Sorrento specialties like clothing, embroidery and furniture; or hire a boat or eat your fill of fresh seafood. Whatever activity you choose, it's exremely difficult not to find la dolce vita in this part of the world.

Day 1: Start off in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital and largest city (and most likely where your plane landed). The city center is built on top of the ancient Roman town of Serdica, named after the Thracian Serdii tribe who initially inhabited this region. One unmissable stop is the famous gilded domes of the St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral, one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world. The crypt has been converted to a museum, claimed to be the largest collection of Orthodox icons in the world. Also within reach of the yellow cobblestones of the city center are Sofia’s National Art Gallery, Palace of Culture, and public mineral baths.

Day 2: Melnik — Travel into the southwest corner of the country to Melnik, a gorgeous architectural reserve and the supposed homeland of the legendary rebel Spartacus. Of Melnik’s 200 buildings, 96 are cultural monuments. The entire town is like a museum, a preserve of Bulgarian medieval and Renaissance culture. The surroundings are unusual as well; located on the edge of Pirin National Park, Melnik is surrounded by natural sand pyramids and strangely eroded rock formations. It’s also a well known wine producer, and tourists can taste the local variety at any tavern in town.

Day 3: Stara Zagora — At at least eight thousand years, Stara Zagora is one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements. Known as the “city of lime trees and poets”, it’s a perfect place to relax at a sidewalk cafe on a shaded boulevard. It offers preserved Neolithic dwellings and Roman ruins for the historoy buff, and opera, theatre, and art galleries for the culturemonger.

Day 4: Nessebar — An excellent spot for the seaside portion of your holiday, Nesebar is a small medieval-aged village and World Heritage site with narrow cobbled streets and a jumble of impressive churches. I’m boycotting WH Smith over travel guide books

News this week that WH Smith has signed an exclusive deal with Penguin travel guides in their 460+ shops, including most airports and train stations has disgusted me. On the rare occasion I do purchase a guide book I want choice not restricted to a certain brand.

You will not be able to purchase guides from the likes of Frommer’s and Lonely Planet.

Last week I purchased an AA city guide to Venice from a WH Smith but I for one will be purchasing any future guide books prior to my arrival at the airport. My meagre purchase of the occasional guide book will not bring WH Smith to its feet, but I suspect I will not be the only person boycotting them.

Debate on the future of the guide book

You have to also think about the writers who write for smaller brands or are independent. The debate over the future of the travel guide book is one that has been discussed at length. If more outlets like WH Smith go down a similar route could this be the end of the travel guide book.

Money talks

I do not know why WH Smith have gone down this path, I suspect its because it’s a lucrative deal but for consumers it’s not right and it’ll only be a matter of time before we find out of if it’s the right decision. I am interested to read your comments on their decision.

On 24th April we (family of 4) arrived in Sardinia for a really-enjoyable-family-bonding holiday in one half of this house:

It is within walking distance of lovely sandy beaches.
It was hot (28 degrees C -perfect for me)– Ben got burnt on the first day and had to cover up for the rest of the week. Here he is lying on Volleyball beach.
He learnt never to underestimate the sun even in April!
It was a good time to go as it wasn’t crowded. Volleyball beach was about 100m walk away down a flowery path where there is a nice beach bar shaded by creepers and vines.
There were lots of holiday homes in the area with pretty gardens surrounded by pine trees.

We brought instruments and played music and painted after the beach then we ate dinner on the terrace. Later we walked to the ice cream bar and bought various delicious ice creams and sorbets which the children were promised - if they were good!
Because it was hot we went to the beach every day instead of touring. By the afternoon the sea had warmed up enough for me to swim in– but the kids played in it all day.
The supermarket is a drive away. A car is recommended.
This property is safe for children as the garden is gated and the owners are very friendly.

Oh, I have been so lax about photographing and posting my paintings. I just don't seem to strike the right time of day to take photos and all the latest ones have such glare on them. Even this one, which was taken by a friend of mine while on holiday in Greece, had a shine on it that I battled to subdue.

On the one hand, because I have journeyed someplace different, I ought to visit some interesting local fare. But then again, if I use up all my time darting around from site to site, when I come home I will want another vacation to recuperate. To get the most from your vacation time, keep the following in mind when travelling to Columbia.

The first thing you ought to do is resolve as much at the start as you can. That means things like interchanging currency when necessary, glancing at maps of the area, renting a means of transportation (did someone say Harley?), booking a flight, and selecting a hotel that fulfills your needs. The good news is, all of these jobs have become much easier and cheaper through the internet, so before contacting a travel agent, you could save some money by looking up good deals on the web.

When it comes to finding the perfect hotel, remember to look at your choices cautiously. Some items to consider would be how it is ranked; is it a two star hotel or a 4 star one? I am sure that I must've appeared strangely out of place walking around the lobby with my inflatable ducky around my waist and no pool to be found.

A good rule to stick by when packing is not to get out of control. Keep it simple, traveler. Begin by getting familiar with the temperature so that you know what you had better pack, but avoid over-packing. Remember, if you forget something, odds are that you can purchase a replacement. As a matter of fact, take as few clothes as possible. I suggest packing older clothing which can be discarded along the way. Depending on where you are, you may discover charities that would be happy to take extra clothing off of your hands. Besides, this will make additional space for souvenirs.

When it comes to entertainment, avoid getting too out-of-control. For instance, don't pack more than one book. If you are able to read an entire book, give that one away and go buy another one. It's time to get out and go to the store anyway, you bookworm. Instead, bring something to take notes with and write your own book. This does not necessarily mean the company laptop. Do not use this rule as an excuse to bring your work with you. If at all possible, leave every thought of work behind when you travel. Though it might seem awkward at first, pencil and paper work fine for taking notes.

Two valuable things to think about including in what you take are Pepto-Bismol, in case something doesn't agree with you, and hand sanitizer; the kind you don't need water for. Please remember, no matter what situation you find yourself in, don't let the sanitizer replace taking a shower.

When you are departing for your adventure to Columbia, you and your family will want to carry plenty of what you need for picture taking. If you are behind the times and still use film, consider moving up to a digital camera. With a digital camera, I can see what I am taking as I go along. The only things I need are batteries and memory space. Now that you can get a wonderful digital camera for under $200, your excuses are dwindling away. Various tourist destinations have stores that will transfer your pics from your memory card to a CD, allowing you to take even more pics to torment friends and family with upon your return home.

I just can't stress enough the value in keeping things simple. Prepare wisely by taking care of everything you can ahead of time. When it comes to travel, remember, the internet is your friend. Pack, plan, and keep entertainment basic to help make sure that your vacation to Columbia is a relaxing and memorable one. I hope that this humble advice will become beneficial to you as you prepare yourself to embark on your vacation.
